Google Tries To Make ‘Tasting’ Of Domain Names Unpalatable

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

NEW YORK (AP)–The online advertising leader Google Inc. (GOOG) said Friday it would help make it less lucrative for users to tie up millions of Internet addresses through a loophole, as the compnay wants to keep those domain names available for legitimate individuals and businesses.

Over the next few weeks, Google will start looking for names that are repeatedly registered and dropped within a five-day grace period for full refunds.

Google’s AdSense program would exclude those names so no one can generate advertising revenue from claiming them temporarily, a practice known as domain name tasting: the online equivalent of buying expensive clothes on a charge card only to return them for a full refund after wearing them to a party.

“We believe that this policy will have a positive impact for users and domain purchasers across the Web,” Google spokesman Brandon McCormick said.

The company said it notified participants via email Thursday.

Name tasting exploits a grace period originally designed to rectify legitimate mistakes, such as registrants mistyping the domain name they are about to buy. But with automation and a burgeoning online advertising market, entrepreneurs have generated big bucks exploiting the policy to test hoards of names, keeping just the ones that turn out to generate the most revenue.

The practice ties up millions of domain names at any given time, making it more difficult for legitimate individuals and businesses to get a desirable name.

Jay Westerdal, who earlier wrote about Google’s change on his DomainTools blog, said in an interview that the ban should make domain name tasting far less lucrative. He noted that Google’s chief rival, Yahoo Inc. (YHOO), already tries to ban tasted addresses that infringe on trademarks and account for much of the problem.

“If Google and Yahoo are not monetizing these types of sites, I think domain tasting as we know it will come to a screeching halt,” Westerdal said. “The alternative advertising is just not as effective.”

In October, Yahoo sued several domain name registration companies over tasting, accusing them of targeting trademarks owned by Yahoo and other leading brands. The lawsuit is pending in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Dell Inc. (DELL) and BMW (BMW.XE) have filed similar federal lawsuits in Florida.

The Internet’s key oversight agency, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, already is looking into name tasting and will soon ask a committee to review the issue and craft recommendations. A public comment period on draft procedures closes Monday.

The operators of the “.org” suffix already won approval to charge companies that make too many returns. The number of deletions dropped to 152,700 in June, compared with 2.4 million in May, after the new fee took effect.

Searchers Want To Know About The R Word

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

It should be the Frau Blucher of words and if we believe in that
marketing genius that was “The Secret” we shouldn’t dare throw it
out there. Nonetheless, the braver the media gets at using the “r”
word, the more people are searching for it.

Thus, they’re all putting the energy out there like seeds and are
waiting to reap the harvest.

Recession. There, I said it, now let’s get on with it.

Yahoo’s Molly McCall at The Buzz Log reports that Yahoo searches
have spiked in the past week regarding that rather unpleasant
term. See, put it out there it just grows.

She writes:

“Over the past seven days, searchers propelled queries on
‘economic recession’ and ‘recession’ upwards. Lookups like ‘last
u.s. recession’ and ‘recession proof jobs’ spiked. Even
’stagflation’ - a term not normally found strolling the Buzz
aisles-more than doubled its numbers.”

Akamai As Proof Of A Non-Neutral Net?

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

An interesting Net Neutrality micro-debate has surfaced
surrounding Akamai and whether Akamai’s services are a violation
of Net Neutrality principles. This argument, produced by an
influential Internet law professor, was used to illustrate that
the Internet has never been neutral.

Net Neutrality, especially when you get into the technical
minutia of the debate, can be a dense and difficult concept, and
often advocates have to fall back on an I-know-a-violation-when-
I-see-it argument. Too often this observation comes after a
perceived breach of consumer trust and rights as a proof of
concept.

Tim Lee, though, does a good job of putting Net Neutrality in
the simplest of terms:

“Network neutrality is about the routing of packets. A network
is neutral if it faithfully transmits information from one end
of the network to the other and doesn’t discriminate among packets
based on their contents. Neutrality is, in other words, about the
behavior of the routers that move packets around the network.”

Canadian Dollar Doomed to Lose in 2008?

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

The Canadian dollar showed an unprecedented growth against the U.S. dollar last year. Rallying almost straight from 1.1635 to 0.9905, USD/CAD lost almost 15% in one year and broke two important support levels - psychological barrier of 1 CAD per USD and reaching its lowest value since the floating of the USD/CAD rate - 0.9057.The growth of the Canadian dollar was mainly caused by the more than 50% rally of the oil prices and similar price uptrends for the majority of the commodities that Canada is exporting. But what consequences this fast appreciating had for the loonie?

First, Canadian exporters suffered greatly from such Forex trend, as their profits fell down while the nomial value of the Canadian dollar soared, thus the record fast drop of the Canadian trade balance surplus. Second, the retails sales also suffer from the fast CAD’s appreciation and now start to indicate that the economy is facing problems in its growth.

Canadian government realized the risks of this trend and started talk about holding down the CAD’s value against USD and other currencies as the major interest of the monetary policy. Cutting the interest rate was the first step to slow the national currency’s growth. USD/CAD gained more than 5% through November and December and returned from below the 1.0000 mark.

This year started with a bullish trend on USD/CAD which, according to many currency analysts, may continue through the whole 2008, helping both the U.S. dollar to recover from the depreciation and Canada’s exporters to reclaim their positions.

Interest Rate Decision’s Influence on EUR/USD

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Today the European Central Bank decided to leave the interest rate unchanged at 4.00%, as it was expected by the markets. But the EUR/USD went up after the decision became known - the currency pair gained more than 70 pips. What has caused that? Along with the rate decision ECB announced another $20 billion intervention to the banks to add more dollar liquidity. That greatly cut the dollar’s position on Forex, especially against European currency.

Positive to the U.S. dollar was the weekly report on the initial jobless claims - last week they dropped from 337k to 322k, while a gain up to 340k has been anticipated by the market analysts.

Wholesale inventories (business) rose up by 0.6% compared with the October’s 0% unchanged value. Economic strategists forecasted only 0.4%, so this is a good news for dollar bulls.

Local Search Ads To $5 Billion In ‘08

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Borrell Associates predicted a big gain in the overall local
online ad market, with local search representing a big slice of
the market share.

We’ll tell the yellow pages firms and local papers why they are
doomed in a moment.

Ok, Borrell Associates has released their 2008 Outlook: Local
Online Advertising report. They estimated next year’s total
local ad market will reach a whopping $12.6 billion in spending.

Of that figure, Borrell said $5 billion will come from local
search advertising. Another $1.3 billion should arrive as the
local online video market triples from 2007.

Now for the bad news for the yellow pages and local news
publishers, from the report:
