Making Money from Your web site and search engine optimisation

Google and ethics

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

The latest article by Matt Cutts “Traffic Power CEO in jail” is just the best example of Google guy arrogant attitude toward those SEOs who try to beat Google at their own game. The Traffic Power was a SEO company that allegedly employed some unethical practices in the search engine optimization. In the SEO world this kind of practice is called “black hat SEO”. When you hear the phrase ‘unethical practices‘, you are immediately turned off and inclined to believe that there were some evil doings involved in their business, which were completely against your moral values or ethics in general. The very term sounds pretty awful, but the fact of the matter is that in the current context it spells ‘unethical’ as opposed to what Google considers ethical. A multi-billion dollar corporation is hardly ever thought of in terms of ethics or high moral standards, but Google’s Don’t be evil motto says it all. From a high moral stand Mr. Cutts can talk with a “smidge of glee” that those who “embrace blackhat SEO on their sites are willing to cut corners in other areas of business as well”. I think this is too far-fetched a conclusion.

In real life people try to find ways to maximize their profits and minimize their costs. This goes for mammoth like Google as well. In the virtual world the costs are minimal (no need for stores, warehouses, decorators, leases, etc), but you need visitors to your site in order to make it profitable. Those usually come from search engines. Search engines have become a very important medium in driving traffic to your website, without which your site may remain in an Internet dungeon that nobody ever realized existed. Each search engine has its own rules how it evaluates sites or what you should do to improve your site’s rankings. Frankly, I’ve never heard of MSN’s or Yahoo’s rules, but Google made their webmaster guidelines widely known all over the Internet. Not following the guidelines is tantamount to all kinds of penalties that Google can impose on your site. Breaking Google guidelines is unethical, because Google says so. All these evil webmasters who try to promote their own sites or their clients’ sites using some questionable tactics will be punished together with their guilty-by-association clients. (more…)

Google Slams Paid Links

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Another under-the-radar-of-the-real-world blog firestorm erupted yesterday over high profile page rank drops. Google dropped visible PR of many blogs and mainstream news sites presumably as a penalty for selling links.

Should Google penalize sites that sell links?

No one except Google really knows for sure why PR dropped for these sites but it certainly looks like an extension of September’s paid directory massacre. This time Google targeted some well-known sites in the search marketing world and mainstream news too.

Sites include niche blogs like Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Roundtable, ProBlogger and nationally prominent sites such as WashingtonPost.com and Forbes.com.

The reactions around the web fall into four categories. Again… these are not my opinions, just a synopsis of what I have read from hundreds of comments in blogs, articles and forums.

Ad Review Center : More Transparency for AdSense Publishers

Friday, December 14th, 2007

After Alot of waiting time , Google decide finally to introduce the new Ad Review Center which allow us to accept or reject ads , so we be able to review placement-targeted ads that have previously run on our site .

In an effort to provide you with more transparency and control over the ads appearing on your pages, we’ve developed the Ad Review Center. This new feature, which we’ll be rolling out to publishers over the next few months, will allow you to review ads placement-targeted to your site and ensure those ads are relevant to your site’s users. When you first opt into the Ad Review Center, you’ll be able to see all placement-targeted ads currently targeted to your site, and a couple of days later you’ll be able to review placement-targeted ads that have previously run on your site. If you think an ad is not relevant for your users, you can prevent it from appearing again by blocking it in the Ad Review Center.

Paid Link Penalties Can Help You To Rank Better

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

November 28th, 2007 by Courtney

If you read what the statement says, you can see that buying or selling links that pass PageRank can negatively effect the rankings of a site. I personally have been watching the sites that are ranked in front of me for ‘internet marketing’ and can tell you that many of the sites in the top 10 in Google were buying links before this fiasco. Many of those links have since come down, including one site-wide link using ‘internet marketing’ as the anchor from a PR10 site. Tell me that this doesn’t make it easier for me.

Google’s Paid Link Smack-Down Is Leveling The Playing Field
I know that some of you are mad because of this whole thing, and I understand that. A revenue stream that you could once use is pretty much over if you’re serious about your site. On the other hand, however, this will make it easier for you to compete for rankings against sites that have bigger budgets than you.

Help Is On The Way For Link Sellers
If you read the quote from Google, you’ll see that Google is ok with selling links, as long as you use nofollows on them. SocialSpark and other services are being created to allow you to connect with advertisers that want to buy buzz, not PageRank. Google is going to be ok with SocialSpark because you will be allowed to place nofollow on your links.

Blogging with Adsense … The basic step

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

First of all I would like to enumerate some tips for blogging with Adsense , This would be the main theme of this blog ,

1-GENUINE CONTENT is the clue , you can get high ranks and good search engine results with genuine content . Search engines are the best source of traffic and so the best source of revenue with adsense.

2-Never start a blog just for adsense , write about what you like , blogging or making a site just for Adsense get you bad ranks and search results , it is called MFA site , it is hated by google and visitors , just write about what you love or like to write about and try to be unique .

3-Better to write with Blogger.

4-Imagine that you are a visitor to your blog , what would you like , make it good looking and ask your friends about their opinion.

5-Update your blog and add new posts at least weekly .

6-Concentrate on organising and proper arrangement.

7-After you made a good genuine blog with proper amount of content , submit your blog to high ranked directories and high ranked social bookmarking sites as Digg.com , also to search engines and RSS sites.

8-Creat your blog site map and submit it to google and yahoo.

9-After you have done all this subscribe with Adsense.

10-Don’t quit easly … be patient and most sites and blogs get high traffic by aging , and always remember visitors = revenue.

11-Change your adsense colors and placement from time to time and try to fix to the highest revenue placements , in my opinion I don’t think that this is effective but a lot of publishers think so . Don’t ask someone to tell you about the best colors or formates , try them by yourself.

Good Luck ,

How Do I Know If My Web Site Has Been Banned By Google

Friday, November 30th, 2007

You might ask yourself has your web site been banned by Google, because you might have read or heard that various actions and methods might make that happen. For example creating multiple web sites with duplicate content or generating web pages with no original content with affiliate ads might get a web site banned by Google. Some people have for example created fake directory pages using DMOZ and Google AdSense ads or other affiliate program ads just to get money when people click the links and some have used computer programs to create large amounts of computer generated link pages, etc. (more…)

Unusal Online Business Ideas

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

So you want to start an online business. You have surfed the web, read some blogs and have found that lots of people are making some decent mullah. But you are frustrated due to the lack of any new idea. Don’t worry. There are still many ideas that you can implement using a little money, lots of efforts, and some persistency.

1. Think about your hobby. What you would like to do in your spare time? May be you like to go hunting, or scuba diving. May be you want to make dolls. List some of the annoyances and inconveniences you encounter while pursuing your hobby. Search in Google to find solutions to your problems and then write a small e-book. Sell the e-book using clickbank dot com.

2. If you are an artist, crafter, or designer, check out etsy dot com. You create your own shop by signing up for free. Listing an item with photos cost 0.20 cents. The selling fee is 3.5% of the final sale price. You can accept payment through PayPal.

3. Start a blog. But don’t start a blog on making money. Find your niche and sign up for free at Blogger to create your blog. You need to select a name for your blog. Select the name of your blog carefully. Write down half a dozen names that tell something about your blog topic. Check out those names using the overture keyword selector tool for search popularity. Use a name that people search at least more than a thousand times every month. (more…)

Mozilla’s Devilish Deal With Google

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

Two aspects of Mozilla’s close ties with Google over development
of the Firefox browser have Chris Soghoian concerned about a
conflict of interest in play.

People who adopt Firefox as a replacement for Microsoft’s
Internet Explorer think they are turning aside a monopolist
in favor of a more secure and open browsing alternative. It
may not be as open as we think.

I missed a little bit of semantic nuance back in May, when
Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler commented on my speculation that Mozilla
could be pressured via Google by a company like Verizon. As Asa
commented, and I’ve emphasized in bold:

“Can Google (or any one, for that matter) effectively pressure
Mozilla to change course on a Mozilla Labs project that they’re
not directly involved with? Absolutely not.”

Now look at the context Soghoian brings to the Mozilla and Google
topic, and how Dotzler’s choice of words appear to fit five months
later.

New Feature: Adsense Manage Ads. Change ads from your account

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Google has revealed new feature in Adsense, which is called Manage Ads.
The new feature lets you change ad block options from your Adsense account without touching ad code in your page code.
Here is a screen shot:

adsense3

From official Adsense Blog:
We’re very excited to let you know about an upcoming feature that lets you easily manage your ad units from within your AdSense account. It isn’t live yet, but here’s a sneak peek so you’ll know what to expect in the coming weeks. (We know many of you have been eagerly anticipating its arrival.)

This new ad management feature means that your ad unit settings (such as colors and channels) for new AdSense for content ad units will be saved in your AdSense account every time you generate ad code. Then, if you’d like to change any of these settings in the future, all you do is make the update within your account — you’ll no longer need to manually replace the ad code on all of your pages. For instance, you can quickly change the borders of all your 300×250 medium rectangles from red to blue with just a few mouse clicks. Fancy! We hope that this new feature will help you save time and will simplify the process of optimizing your ad units.
