Google Dials Into the CellPhone Market!

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

Google Inc. wants to become as influential in the mobile market as it is on the Internet _ and the online search leader thinks it can do that without sticking its prized brand on a cell phone. The Mountain View-based company provided the first glimpse at its mobile ambitions Monday with the announcement of a free software package scheduled to hit the market during the second half of next year.
The system, which will control an untold number of cell phones, is designed to unify the developers of mobile applications around a common platform that makes it easier and more enticing to surf the Web on cell phones. The new package is called “Android” in tribute to a Silicon Valley startup that Google acquired two years ago to steer its secretive project.
Google is hoping Android opens another lucrative channel for peddling ads and services to people when they’re away from their personal computers, supplementing the revenue already pouring into the company from Internet advertising.
Contrary to reports that surfaced during months of breathless speculation, Google isn’t making cell phones, nor does it plan to put its name on the devices equipped with its software. Instead, it will work with four manufacturers and 29 other companies that have formed the Open Handset Alliance to help launch Google’s mobile software.
But Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt hinted the company might eventually make its own phone powered by the new software.
“We don’t want to foreclose any options in the future,” Schmidt told reporters during a Monday conference call.

Azoogle settled the ringtone investigation for $1 million dollars

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

$1 million - easy business write off. One would have to assume their on the decline - considering their shady email background (Spamhaus listings), their boot from CJ (eBay), dozens of layoffs, denial of a second round of VC financing, and now this. Interesting note: Joe and Alex hired former Gambino crime family attorneys to defend them in this investigation.

The settlement also serves as a wake-up call to the rest of the players in the ringtone industry. The bottom line is that carriers, aggregators, ringtone providers, and affiliate networks ARE responsible and WILL be accountable for their actions. It’s not enough for an affiliate network to hide affiliates (and themselves) behind an “ID.” And although the “Florida” attorney general’s office settled - it doesn’t exclude other state’s from further action. It’s not unusual to see other states jump in on these kinda things.

Unfortunately, many players in the industry continue to be non-compliant. For example, COPEAC, also under investigation:

Customized page made (made by WickedFire member: EduardoM3) - No pricing, No terms/conditions, and “Free”

Traffix now owned by New Motion, Inc (Mobile Sidewalk) uses “Free” in all their PPC ads.

When you see these kinda things it’s no wonder the ringtone space is being hit with new rules and regulations. All the players in the industry are going to have to do a better job of monitoring and enforcement because ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Creating Effective Azoogle Landing Pages

Landing pages are commonly used in conjunction with Google Adwords, so I thought it’d be important to talk about landing page creation a bit.

  1. Call to Actions. Use impulse words and phrases such as “buy now”, “get it free today!” or “Register Now!” – you’d be surprised how many people will follow through with an offer when they see those words.
  2. Quick and To the Point. Don’t give long winded explanations, try to explain as much as you can in as few words as you can, people are generally lazy and aren’t interested in reading a thesis about a product.
  3. Formatting. Keep your landing page well formatted. Use paragraphs, separate different sections under different headings, and make it as easy to read as possible.
  4. Images. Images attract viewers attentions, place them within important parts of the content to draw them in to that section.
  5. Ask and Answer. A common technique is to use ‘Ask and Answer’. This is when you ask your visitor a question, but answer it yourself. Example: “Do you want low cost appliances? Yes! Register with this Site Today!”
  6. Fast Load Times. Not everyone has broadband, try to minimize the load time as much as possible whilst still making it visually appealing.
  7. Eye Level Information. Stick all the important information right in front of the visitor, leave out the bulk of the details and place them lower down in the page. You want your visitors to comprehend what the site is straight away.
  8. Limit Navigation. You want your visitor to stay, not navigate to a different site. Limit the amount of navigation and links on your site so they don’t “wander off”.
  9. No Other Ads. If you’re trying to get someone to complete an offer don’t add Adsense or other ads to your page, like with the limiting navigation, you want your visitors to stay so they can be convinced they want to buy a product, or register with a site.
  10. Testimonials. Ask people for testimonials and then post these on your landing page. This adds trust on your behalf.
  11. Free Traffic. There is no reason landing pages can’t get some extra free traffic, submit it to Google, and to some directories to try and get some back links. IF you do have some related landing pages you may consider linking to these, but only casually – you still want to keep your visitor on the one landing page.
